A distant field, a wide field
A long road runs across this field
And by the road, a hill lies
And a slender tree stands on top
A slender fir - but without branches
Just a small crossbar attached to the top
And on that crossbar nailed to see the spread image of Christ the Lord
His bloody head tilts to the right
His pierced hands spread wide
He points to two sides of the world with them
To two opposite sides, as the road aims
The right to the east, where the light is born
The left to the west, where the night rules

There in the east is the heavenly gate
There in the eternal paradise live the saints of God
And whoever does well, a reward awaits him
That he will rejoice there with them
But in the west are the gates of hell
There the sea of sulfur and tar burns
There the devils weave, the cursed troop
Cursed souls into fiery wheels
On the right, Lord Christ, let us get there
But from the left, free your children

There on that hill lying on his knees
Our young pilgrim in the morning light beat
His hand wrapped around the cross
He passionately embraces the feelingless wood
Soon he whispers something, tears flow from his eye
Soon he sighs again - heavily, deeply.

This is how he says goodbye to his dear maiden
A lovely young man in recent times
Heading to foreign parts of the world
Not even knowing if they will meet again
Still the last passionate embrace
Still a kiss like a burning flame
Now take care here, desirable girl
Unhappy moment drives me away from here

Face like a wall, icy gaze
But in the heart a destructive, wild flame
Suddenly the pilgrim rises from the ground
And quickly aims his steps to the west

Soon after he disappeared in the thick forest brush:
God comfort him on his journey
