Tritagonist - XI. Rubicon Lyrics

Tritagonist - XI. Rubicon Lyrics
Official

They said, You're more than a conqueror
But a war lording conquistador was expected
To build their Holy Roman Empire dynasty
Masqueraded as church, though told of a Kingdom
Where all are princes. They demanded my heroism
When but a teen, strapping a wooden sword
In hilt; kill anything in my way, because they said
Gird your loins; pray for your salvation
For crossing the river has no turning back
Did Pharaoh say the same of the Red Sea
They claimed to speak for the Burning Bush
Calling for undying loyalty. If lucky in our thirst
They'd strike rods twice against a quarreling rock
But claim to enter the Promised Land first
With the Jordan ahead, they knew the way
Declaring with the divine rights of kings
Gird our loins; pray for our salvation
For we cross this stream with no turning back
They're all but dead now. The spoils of holy wars
Are buried, the denial of Cain's toil; today in the soil
Before this river with regrets, I almost hear predecessors
Standing in these same footsteps: before the Rubicon
Did Julius Caesar wonder, What would Romulus
And Remus do
Wishing to suckle from a she-wolf's
Breast, before marching to
Gird his loins and pray for his city's salvation
He crossed that river with no turning back
Did Napoleon give that which is
Caesar's and God's when facing the
Nieman, and with strength of iron
Resolve and army Moscow would be owned
Standing among tremendous loss of life
And scorched earth policies, the same view
Was declared by Louis Napoleon for an operation
Called Rubicon, the French coup d'etat of 1851, to
Gird a nation's loins and pray for countrymen's salvation
For couping a river makes no turning back
I've decided to follow Jesus, but I didn't
Decide this direction; I found a nihilistic
Love where God failed at being my head water
Yet he brought me to the river-flow. Will there
Be an estuary leading to sea? Jesus, what would
You do in these shoes? On the opposite shore
I've already crossed my Rubicon
Gird my loins, and pray for redemption
For when walking seas and storms, there's no turning back
They said, You're more than a conqueror
But never knew their meaning while they lusted
For war. Even still, I found a context: neither death
Nor life can separate us from the love of God
