The Last 5 Years Soundtrack Lyrics
- SYNOPSIS - Lyrics
Catherine is alone in the apartment which she shared with Jamie until very recently. Their marriage has just come to an end. Jamie has moved on, but she is Still Hurting.
Five years earlier. Jamie and Catherine are on their first date, and he thinks she might be "the one" (Shiksa Goddess). Back to Catherine, near the end of the relationship. Jamie has come to visit her at the theatre in Ohio where she is working for the summer. She is trying to convince them both that there is still a chance for them to work everything out, but they end up having another fight (See I'm Smiling).
Jamie can't believe how great his life is going. An aspiring writer, he's starting to get published, and his relationship with Cathy is working out really well. His only concern is that everything might be Moving Too Fast. Cathy is at one of Jamie's book-signings, telling herself that even though they might not have the marriage of her dreams, it's still something special, and "I'm a Part of That".
It is the first Christmas that Jamie and Catherine are together. Before he gives her his gift, Jamie tells her a story (The Schmuel Song), and then gives her a watch - the gift of time. Cathy is spending the summer in Ohio doing regional theatre. It's not exactly what she's dreamt of, but it's a start, as she tells Jamie in a letter, asking him to come and visit (A Summer in Ohio).
Jamie is in a boat in Central Park. He asks Cathy to share his life with him for The Next Ten Minutes. She accepts and they are married. It is the only moment in the show when they are at the same point in time.
A newlywed Jamie is at a bar with a friend. He says he loves being married to Cathy, but there are "challenges" as well (A Miracle Would Happen). Cathy is having her final audition for the job in Ohio, and then Jamie is on the phone with her, telling her he will visit as soon as he can.
Cathy is auditioning, and not having much success. She has dinner with her father later and tells him it's like Climbing Uphill. Her audition does not go well, and she tells her friend that she doesn't want to have to depend on Jamie to be successful.
Jamie and Cathy are fighting in their apartment. Jamie's publishers are throwing a party for him, and Cathy doesn't want to go. He doesn't understand why she can't support him when he does his best for her (If I Didn't Believe in You).
Cathy is taking Jamie to meet her parents. She shows him around the town she grew up in, and tells him about the mistakes of her past, assuring him that now that she's met him, she knows "I Can Do Better Than That". Jamie is in bed with another woman while Cathy is away in Ohio. He tries to justify what he's doing (Nobody Needs to Know).
Cathy has just finished her first date with Jamie. She feels that he is who she has been waiting for (Goodbye Until Tomorrow). Jamie is alone in their apartment, finishing the arrangements for moving out (I Never Could Rescue You). They both finish the show by saying "goodbye".
