The Hanging Tree Lyrics by Jennifer Lawrence

Hunger Games Soundtrack Lyrics

Jennifer Lawrence - The Hanging Tree Lyrics
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where they strung up a man
They say who murdered three.

Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where the dead man called out
For his love to flee.

Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run,
So we'd both be free.

Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Wear a necklace of rope*,
Side by side with me.

Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run,
So we'd both be free.

Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
They strung up a man
They say who murdered three.

Strange things have happened here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where dead man called out
For his love to flee.

Strange things have happened here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

(* In the original version its "rope", in MockingJay Part 1 it was changed to "hope"
Also "No stranger would it be if we met at midnight" was originally
"No stranger would it seem if we met up at midnight")

The Hanging Tree Info:

• The lyrics were written by The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins and originally appeared in her novel Mockingjay. The music was composed by Jeremiah Fraites and Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers.
• Director Francis Lawrence said: "The idea for the song came from the book... Suzanne Collins wrote the lyrics and the idea was that it was an old Appalachian folk song that her father had taught her. So I knew we needed a melody like that."

"And the Lumineers had written a really beautiful song for the Catching Fire soundtrack, and I thought they could probably tackle something like that if they were interested. So I called them up...and the next day they sent me a recording of somebody whistling the tune and also a woman singing it. And it was perfect."
