It was long hot days, blood sweat and tears
Summer and fall in football gear
Living life with not a worry in sight
Coach taught us the game, taught us to fight
Taught us the joy of the Friday night lights
But most of all he taught us about life
I don't recall many of the plays, the games we won or gave away
But after all these years I'm reminded he'd say
Remember where you are

And remember where you're going
Year two of college, decided I was done
Dropped everything thought I'd have a little fun
Wasting away, thinking I was living the dream
I lived for the night, sipped on the bottle
Made some mistakes that were hard to swallow
Never thought that person would be me
I'd often think back on those days
We were told we'd miss when they went away
And I'd recall those words that old man would say
He'd say remember where you are
Remember where you've been
And remember where you're going
The ups and downs, good and the bad
Sunshine and rain, happy and sad
It's all a part of the journey we call life
So take the lessons lived and learned
And make the best of days to come

I'll never forget the day I heard
My daddy had that six letter word
Six months later in his final bed he laid
My family and I stood around that bed
Gleaning to every word he said
As we watched the time we had fade away
He talked about his love for us
His love for friends and his love for church
And he made sure to never blame the Lord above
