I can hear the bloodhounds braying
With their noses on my trail
Their howling got me praying
Now here comes the rain and hail
I'm hiding in a berry bush
With stickers in my skin
There ain't no way
I'm getting caught again
Twelve years ago on trial
Just for walking by
The doorway of a store
Where a clerk'd been left to die
I shouted out my innocence
But the jury couldn't hear
The sentence I got
Was lifetime and a year
I sat twelve years forgotten
In a stone and metal cage
All that time just thinking
And building up my rage
But now I've got one
Single, lonesome, solitary drive
To be free
While getting out of here alive
Wind is blowing in a gale
There's hail like bowling balls
My life is in a barrel
Headed for Niagara Falls
Without looking behind me
I just make a break and run
Not listening for
The sound of any gun
Well if it matters to you
What becomes of me
As long as I can run
Is how long I will be free
Everybody's story
Is a cautionary tale
But that don't keep the bloodhounds
Off your trail
