The ship is gone, it left today
It's going somewhere far away
We had fun while it was here
All the sailors so close, so near
They were all so nice and sweet
Quite a few we soon did meet
We saw them first from on the shore
And then up closer on the tour
There was a party Wednesday night
From that night on most things went right
We took them places near and far
I even let one drive my car!
They played soccer against the Saints
And all that day it drizzled rain
We saw them often, day and night
A few times even at Harbor Lights
We were with them a lot that week
On Friday night over in Town Creek
The ship's band which we longed to hear
Played Sunday night at Solomon's Pier
They were supposed to play on Monday night
Too late we found that wasn't right
There was a party Tuesday on the base
By then we knew 'most ev'ry face
After that 'round eight o'clock
We went and froze out on the dock
It was very cold on the way to the ship
Up the steep ladder, trying not to slip
It was our very last chance to be together
Unless they were delayed by stormy weather
They had to stay here one more day
Which made us happy in ev'ry way
Then we were told they were stuck aboard
The ones we cared for and adored
What we planned just didn't work out
'Cause that's what our lives are all about
(Well, now they're gone for ever and ever
But we'll always have dreams of being together)
