One warm spring night
I'm born a sinner
Despite my mother's perfect piety
Fell in the wrong crowd
Grew up a scoundrel
I never did amount to anything
They did their best with
My education
In Sunday School we'd pray for clarity
But all the churches
And cryptic verses
Never revealed a f*cking thing to me
But it's alright
Cause in hindsight
We wrestled with angels and saints
And lost to bourbon and shame
I confess now
I'm always a let down
But I just feel old and it's late and I'm stuck in this republic of thieves
I never wanted to be
I never wanted to bleed
When I left home they
They said be honest
And find some friends that have integrity
Now I conspire
With thieves and liars
Turns out they're just a lot more interesting
They blamed the anger
On my depression
They blamed the threats on my anxiety
They took my good drugs
And gave me new drugs
Yeah they just want to put me back to sleep
But it's alright
Because last night
We made sure the beggars are armed
And put the liars in charge
I think this time
We've run out of false light
I've tried to get out, it's too late, I'm still here in this republic of thieves
I never wanted to be
I never wanted to bleed
So the cops took you in and asked if you'd seen anything
And so you sang like a bird and told them everything
It's a Republic of greed
We're the saints and the liars
We're the angels and thieves
We're the faithful deniers
We're the beggars that bleed
And we're the quiet disasters
We steal and we cheat
And we're the smug little bastards
It's a Republic of greed
We're the saints and the liars
We're the angels and thieves
We're the faithful deniers
We're the beggars that bleed
And we're the quiet disasters
We steal and we cheat
And we're the smug little bastards
It's a Republic of greed
We're the saints and the liars
We're the angels and thieves
We're the faithful deniers
We're the beggars that bleed
And we're the quiet disasters
We steal and we cheat
And we're the smug little bastards
