Pearl Jam - Dark Matter Album Lyrics

Pearl Jam - Dark Matter Lyrics

Scared of Fear

Oh, did I say something wrong?
Oh, did I walk out of step?
To you, do I still belong?
Do I have to be scared?
Oh, I'm not saying I know, it's all feeling unclear
We all like control, I surrender to you, dear

You're hurting yourself, it's plain to see
I think you're hurting yourself just to hurt me
We used to laugh, we used to sing
We used to dance, we had our own scene
You're hurting yourself, it's plain to see
I think you're hurting yourself 'cause to hurt me
We used to laugh, we used to sing
We used to dance, we used to believe

There's something I should've known?
Was I acting too proud?
Oh, in my weakness, did I somehow get too loud?
Oh, can I get you alone?
Oh, let me fall at your feet
Why must I be compelled to admit defeat?

You're hurting yourself, it's plain to see
I think you're hurting yourself just to hurt me
We used to laugh, we used to sing
We used to dance, we were our own scene
Hurting yourself, nothing to tell
Your secret is well and safe with me
We used to laugh, we used to sing
We used to crash, we used to believe

I hear the voices calling, hear the voices calling
All around my head, all around my head
Hear the voices calling, oh, again they're calling
All around my head, have I lost my friend?
Is this what we've become? One last setting sun
I'll give, but I can't give up, I'll live, not long enough
To stop these voices calling, stop the voices calling
All around my head, as if you never left

You're hurting yourself, it's plain to see
I think you're hurting yourself just to hurt me
We used to laugh, we used to sing
We used to dance, we had our own scene
Hurting yourself, it's plain to see
I think you're hurting yourself 'cause you hurt me
We used to laugh, we used to drink
We used to dance, we used to believe

Oh-oh, whoa
Yeah

React/Respond

I see you worried and hurried
As if addressing the jury
Oh, you are innocent, you're proving innocent
You are hurting and it's so magnificent
Don't let the sky hook beat you to submission
Maybe it's the price, the price of our admission
Ain't no f*cking roses to our condition
Turn this anger into nuclear fission, yeah, baby, baby

Ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

Don't react, respond
Don't react, respond
When what you get is what you don't want
Don't react, respond

Are we at war with each other?
Are you at war with yourself?
We could be fighting together
Instead of fighting ourselves
Start the rebuttal, all part of the game
Yes, what makes us different and what makes us the same
Ah, the incandescence that is your essence
The unexpected embrace, embrace the unexpected
There's no book on this life, there's no use as directed
The best part I know was when we were connected

Ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

Don't react, respond
Don't react, respond
When what you get is what you don't want
Don't react

As the light gets brighter as it grows
The darkness, it recedes
It's better to give, give than to deceive
Questions dissolve the more you believe, ah

Don't react, respond
Don't react, respond
When you get what you don't want
Don't react, respond
Don't react, respond
Don't react, respond
When you get what you don't want
Don't react, respond

Hahaha

Wreckage

Visited by thought, another darkened day
How you are like the sun hiding somewhere beyond the rain
I'm needing for the light, stormy is the grey
Rivers overflowing, drowning all our yesterdays

Visited by thoughts on another darkened week
How even every winner hits a losing streak
The mistakes we all make and perfectly repeat
Chains are made by DNA refusing, refusing to release

Combing through the wreckage, pouring through the sand
Surrounded by the remnants, what we could and couldn't have
Raking through the ashes, falling through my hands
Charcoal on the faces in the burned up photographs

Oh, visited by thoughts and this I got to say
If you're feeling the leaving, I can't make you stay
I've only ever wanted for it not to be this way
But you're now like the water and the water will find its way

Combing through the wreckage
Holding out, holding on
Combing through the wreckage
Combing through the wreckage

Oh, visited by thoughts and not just in the night
That I no longer give a f*ck who is wrong and who's right
This game of winner takes all and all means nothing left
Spoils go the victor and the other left for dead

Uh-huh, combing through the wreckage
Holding out, holding on
Combing through the wreckage

Combing through the wreckage
Holding out, holding on
Holding out
Holding you, holding on

(Combing through the wreckage) Combing through the wreckage
(Falling through the wreckage) Falling through the wreckage
(Crawling through the wreckage) Holding out
(Combing through the wreckage) Holding on
Combing through the wreckage
(Falling through the wreckage) Falling through the wreckage
(Crawling through the wreckage) Crawling through the wreckage
(Combing through the wreckage) Combing through the wreckage
(Combing through the wreckage) Combing through the wreckage
Combing through the wreckage

Dark Matter

Steal the lights from our eyes
Take my blood from my heart
We're in all of this dark matter

Take the breaths from my chest
Take the pulse and I'm outta line
We're losing time, dark matter

Denounce the demagogues
King diamond to discard
Deplore the dialogue
Your word against the law

It's strange these days
When everybody else pays
For someone else's mistake
This blame takes shape
Still everybody else pays
For someone else's mistake

You're running away
We're pulling apart
In all of this dark matter

I once heard a sin
And now it's stuck in my head
Or is it the press?
No one knows what happens next

Renounce the demigods
King diamond to discard
Deplore the dialogue
Your word against the law

It's strange these days
When everybody else pays
For someone else's mistake
This blame takes shape
Still everybody else pays
For someone else's mistake

No tolerance for intolerance, intolerance for-
No patience left for impatience no more
No love lost for lost loves
No sorrow for the unaccountable

It's strange these days
When everybody else pays
For someone else's mistake
This blame takes shape
Still everybody else pays
For someone else's mistake

Wont Tell

Her eyes were soft and sympathized
A vision so uncompromised floated in
As she pulled the book up off the shelf
Her dressing gown and nothing else but a secret grin
And I always had one question
Free of all suggestion
Do I say or keep it in?

You can find me here
Waiting for your message to come
Can you heal? Can you feel
The chains in my heart?
Waiting for a message to come
Can you heal? Can you feel
The change in my heart?

In my heart

She laid the book upon the desk
Opened to the page I asked, "Could that be the one?"
As she smiled and played a minor chord
In a key I never heard before, one song and it was done

You can find me here
Waiting for your message to come
Can you heal? Can you feel
The chains in my heart?
Waiting for a message to come
Can you heal? Can you feel
The change in my heart?

Oh, I'd open the door, I'd let you in
I would open it if you came
But if it's not you knocking
It's staying closed
Oh, I'd open the door, shed all my skin
Allow for a bit of grace
For in my dream you told
Me to let the longing go
Oh, and the promise I still hold
Won't tell a soul

Can you feel?
Can you heal?
Can you feel
The change in my heart?
Can you feel?
Can you heal?
Can you feel?
Can you heal?

Upper Hand

The distance to the end
Is closer now than it's ever been
Road we traveled far
All the lights and sights we saw
No room left on the pages
We filled 'em up and painted some
Though the book, it may never be read
Oh, by anyone, oh, anyone but me

And I hope the people are smiling
And I hope that today and every day is grand
Oh, I apologize, so sorry 'bout the timing
But you know, something that I never had was the upper hand

Lonely ship on the horizon
Silhouette fading out
Bright lights make for dark shadows
The lines once defined getting blurry now

And I hope the people are smiling
Oh, how I always wanted to be like one of them
Oh, I apologize, so sorry 'bout the timing
Oh, but you know, something that I never had was the upper hand

Upper hand

Help to carry me home
Help to carry me home
Oh, help to carry me home, eh
Carry me
Carry me home
Carry me home
Just need a few of you
A few of you
Oh, maybe just the two of you
Two of you

Waiting for Stevie

You can be loved by everyone
And not feel, not feel love
You can be told by everyone
And not hear a word from above

Swallowed up by the sound cutting holes in the clouds
Finds herself in the song, hears her own voice rising

You can be loved by everyone
And still not feel, not feel love
You can relate, but still can't stop
Or conquer the fear you are what you're not

Would have to take an act of faith
To find relief and escape the blame
Words follow her down, needs to shake 'em off now, now
This godforsaken town, don't deserve her anyhow

Calling on a messenger
Awaiting on a face (ah-ah-ah)
That she could trust, a messenger
For her love, her love

Oh, you can be loved by everyone
And not feel, feel love
You can be told to not give up
And still not hear a word from above
You can't take or give what you got
Dissolve the fear, you are what you're not
No, you can be loved by everyone
And not feel, feel love

You can be loved
You, you can be loved
You, you can be loved
You, you can be loved
You

Sometimes I feel something, at times I feel there are lies
Be mighty, be humble, be mighty humble
Yeah, yeah

Running

Got me running

Got me running, got me running
But the race, it never ends
Got me running, or else I'm done in
You got me coming as you're going
And the chase, it never ends
I'll be running 'til the second coming

Dictator, love hater
Lost in the tunnel and the tunnel ain't no fun
Now I'm lost in all the shit you're flushing
Victrola, controller
Lost in the tunnel and the tunnel's getting funneled
Like the sewage in the plumbing
'Cause we left the f*cking water running

Got me running

Got me diving, got me diving
Got me deep, I'm in the bends
When I'm summoned, or too late coming
You got me running, got me running
But the race, it never ends
I'm feeling done in, it's rather stunning

Dictator, love hater
Lost in the tunnel and the tunnel ain't no fun
Now I'm lost in all the shit you're flushing
Victrola, controller
Lost in the tunnel and the tunnel's getting funneled
Like the sewage in the plumbing
'Cause we left the f*cking water running

Was cleared for, for lift off
Aborted my take off
Living in the shadows, crossing my fingers
A date with the gallows and a reprieve not looking likely

You got me running
You got me running
You got me running
You got me running

All clear for liftoff, I wanna take off
I got my head up, straight down the tunnel
You wanna go, I wanna see you
Now watch me walk off
So she can f*ck off

Something Special

If you could see what I see now
You gotta know I'm looking up, oh, so proud
The one I used to hold is, oh, so special
Mmm, and every setback now but a chance to grow
If further proof that you're phenomenal
You better believe it that you are something special
Whoa, oh, whoa
Afraid to fail, oh, same as afraid to try
These are the days to accept all the invites
'Cause you're so cool and, baby, on the level

Oh, and someday you
May find yourself in the place that I now do
And someway you, yeah
You're gonna have to let it go, whoa, oh
And I got proof
'Cause my heart, it aches and breaks (ah-ah-ah)
But I believe in you
It's the truth

And it's okay, should this life knock you down
The twisted wheel, you know it keeps on spinning 'round
Bet on yourself, your number's, oh, so special
Mmm, and when it gets f*cked up, you need a helping hand
Do it yourself, you're not the type to need a man
But if you find one, he better know you're damn special

Oh, and someday you (ah-ah)
May find yourself in the place that I now do
And someway you
Gonna have to let it go
And I got proof (ah-ah)
For my heart, it aches and breaks
But I believe in you
Whoa, ain't it, oh, ain't it the truth?

Mmm, remind yourself and find what makes you free
It's goal to go and time to find out what you seek
And in between, avoid the devil
Oh, and if the night grows long, you're not feeling loved
I will be there and not 'cause it's my job
I work for free because you're both so special

Oh, ain't it (ah-ah)
Oh, ain't it the truth?
We believe, believe, believe in you
We all got something
We all got something to prove
Oh, out of everyone
You're not just anyone (ah-ah)
You're the one and only you
We done all we can do

Got to Give

Stormy seas behind your eyes
The dark moon is setting on your cheap disguise
Whoever said love is a compromise
Knew you

Castle falling, turning into sand
The high tide is crumbling, on the rocks we sit
Never could believe a single word they said
About you

And there I am, just picking up the parts
A broken engine busted, lifted up on blocks
Should've made the turns when the road got rough
But who knew

I'll be the last one standing
I'll be the first to forgive, yeah
Give it away empty-handed
Breaks in my heart 'til something gives

I saw the doctor, said I'm falling apart
This heartbreak connection, all the blood dried up
Said he could've fixed it, had to open me up
Just like you

And I can't stand it, 'cause it's no way to live
The pain of this every day has got to give
Give me liberty or give me death
Over you

I'll be the last one standing
I'll be the first to forgive, yeah
Give it away empty-handed
Breaks in my heart 'til something gives

Getting to the point where I can't breathe
Getting to the point got nothing to sing
Getting to the point where life don't
Mean a thing, let's get to the point
We all are heard and seen
Oh, let's get to the point, we can
We can believe that we are better
Together, you and me, yeah
Can take on anyone, anyone
If you can see

Something's got to give
Got to give
Something's, something's got to give, yeah
Something's got to give, yeah
Something's got to give
Got to give

Setting Sun

The cast was made to reset broken bones
But there's no such thing to fix a love gone wrong
Keep knocking the door 'cause I know someone's there
I wait on the porch hoping someday, I'll be let in
They say in the end everything will be okay
If it's not okay, well then, it ain't the end

Had dreams to you I would belong
Had the dream you would stay with me 'til kingdom come
Turns out forever has come and gone
Am I the only one hanging on?

Hand in hand, yeah, we took it on
You answered my prayers, now from my knees, I can't get up
Lost patience with time, yeah, hurry up your patience tonight
I'd like some of yours, in trade, can take all of mine

I dreamt to you I would belong
Held the dream you would stay with me 'til kingdom come
Turns out it was more like hit-and-run
Am I the only one hanging on?
Whoa, am I the only one hanging on?

If you could see what I see now
You'd find a way to stay somehow
Oh, if you could see, yeah, what I see now
You'd make your way to stay somehow

May your days be long 'til kingdom come
May our days be long before kingdom come
May our days be long until kingdom come
We can become one last setting sun
Am I the only one hanging on?
We could become one last setting sun
Or be the sun at the break of dawn
Let us not fade
Let us not fade
