Each morning brings the afterglow
A fading echo of bad news
I never wanted you to know
But do we ever get to choose?
And I wonder, someday soon
Will all these demons steal away?
Or will the tunnel run on anyway?
Though each new day, the distance grows
Still seems so close to you and I
Time runs on, reeling from the throes
Of detonations in the sky
But as the silent embers fall
I still won't let you walk away
Take my hand, for we've so much left to do anyway
So how can you sleep so soundly
When your head carries that kind of curse?
Yet you'll watch as the sun still rises
As you learn that you're far from the first
To live in embers
I'll pick the flowers from the ash
And fashion you a lighter crown
For though the world's gone in a flash
Its people's love lives deeper down
I know you never wanted me
And that was fine until you'd say
I'm never sure I wanted anything, anyway
So how can you sleep so soundly
When your head carries that kind of curse?
Yet you'll watch as the sun still rises
As you learn that the clouds can still burst
Above the embers
