We are servants paid with scraps and praise
A fraction of yours, and yet we give you all our days
This world is alien in every way
Unsteady, we become what you need us to be
I once thought that each road leads home
But this path has led me to see
This shadow is only the shape of the presence of light
Where it falls warm and bright on our faces
It makes weak the foundation
Of a life where we're not dragged behind
By chains and hands that forgot why they made us
There's still pain
In a cage made from love
Is this how we're supposed to grow?
We scrape the best off the bottom
Taking pride in the attention of awarded affection but
We are the means to a better end
We can make ourselves whole again if we
Stop, drop everything that we knew
Break off the pieces of us that we
Can't shake off on our own
This shadow between you and me
Shaped by love and cruelty
Tints pale where light beams alongside us
And, in waiting, confines us from brightness and much warmer days
The reigns and hands that once drove us lay stagnant
And so we remain
Sitting by the door
Sometimes the things we've lost we see in ourselves
Sometimes pain resolves to purpose
Sometimes it just overwhelms
We howl to be seen
Tear at seams and cry out
But no sound can break the silence
There sits a thin line between earth and sky
A haunting shadow cast in the light from silver eyes
It made its place in my veins
Took shape of wind in the frame
But fear won't keep me from crossing that boundary
I faced the world
Saw you and I conform into horizons
I faced the pain and found it
Not so bright and violent
I faced the fear of loss
Stretched-out spaces
Children in wolf's skin
Pretty and broken
Left all alone by those buying our lives
If we are starved
We can learn how to harm
To bite at the hand
With a mouth full of knives
And I know we tried
But the beauty is
That there's still time
