I looked upon a single bird
Perched upon a roof
Solitaire and motionless
As if he couldn't move
He stayed this way for hours
And I suppose so did I
And he flew off without a notion or a clue
Of what he left behind

I stood there awhile longer
Just to see if he'd come back
When I felt somebody close behind me
Staring at my left
I turned around to face them
But whoever it was was gone
With a trace of disappointment
I began to move on

How come it always feels like forever
When your trying to get home
No matter what the distance is
Its still so very far
But once you go on through the door
And feel the familiar thought
You never look back on that lonely street
Your thinking strolled upon

I sometimes climb upon my roof
Just to see the powerlines go running down
On every street for miles and miles and miles
Sometimes I think I'm running down every single pole
Laughing at the people trying to get home

But as I'm sitting on my roof
Lost somewhere were powerlines don't go
I see that lonely little bird
