All winter waiting
Wistfully wanting
New life to spring up
From somewhere
Below cracked surfaces
Bringing with it colour
To daub new early morning light
With beauty and renewed verve
Maudlin grey fading
With remnants of ice
That for months have chilled
And stalked Earth's resting crust
Submerged bulbs lie in hibernation
Amidst soil and rock
They persist, despite isolation
Locked in frozen bitterness
Life lingers awaiting spring
