Margalee - Welcome to the World Lyrics

Margalee - Welcome to the World Lyrics

In the July heat a storm greets the porch
While thunder shakes the swing back and forth
And my young German Shepherd examines the sky
It is so oddly black for 3 o'clock
And swallowing the cul-de-sac
Wishing I spoke "dog", I look at her and think
Welcome to the world!
Welcome to a planet where charcoal clouds
Race like ambulances
Where a man stands barefoot in the rain
When a nearby wire breaks into a fire
I promise your puppy-brain and I
Will not understand everything
You're a dog, not a human, and I, not a god
Though the two are nearly spelt the same
Nah, forget it anyway...

My dog, welcome to the world!
Welcome to the world

Perhaps in the past life I was the dog
And you sat explaining to me
The contents of this universe
And all there was and all there could be
And why poetry is forgotten by the many
While the few obsess over it
Swig it down like the last bit of coffee before the bill
Clutch it between the envelopes in their briefcases
At crosswalks, and fruit stands, at laundry mats
Magazine stands, hotdog stands
One-night stands, laundry dumps, gas pumps
At picnics, atop ferris wheels, on phone calls
Conference calls, long, melodic long-distance calls
That leave two people wanting
At annual fairs, on fold-out chairs in the rain
Where one tired mother compares titles
"Artist" and "Soccer Mom"...

My dog, welcome to the world!
Welcome to the world

Welcome to where meter and metaphor make so many yawn
How do I explain this to a dog?
Somewhere you were born here
On the very same planet where you will die
Where you must die
Because all that flushes pink, listen puppy!
Must brown and lose importance
Welcome to lime spring moss and promises
And blood-orange leaves that do fall
And all of the color you could not ask for on Mars or Pluto
You are blessed in being here and cursed in being here
You're fortunate and out of luck and time
Tomorrow's world will inevitably surprise
Routine is fictional
Change is routine
The storm makes a siren break
And a porch-swing cozy on the very same day
But never mind all that, dog...
Welcome
Welcome to the world
