It's summer 1989
Or some other time
Michelle is shaking on the stage
She can't bear the weight
Her voice lends
Her tiny body
The mic squeaks
She put it right next to her face
Then the music starts to play
She comes in
Half a beat too late
Aahhh
His eyes like rubies
His hair like asphodel
And it drives me insane
I'll always love him
I'll always think of him
But he'll never feel the same
So I'll go
Where the rivers flow
And I'll sink
Away
It's an hour since we set this scene
Jimmy's watching carefully
He's singing harmonies
Under his breath
In the crowd
And his eyes go wide
And his legs go shaky
As she hits a note
He never could have dreamed of
And she keeps going
And then she's done
And it's his turn
(adolescent mumbling)
And the crowd is still
Not a single hand claps
And he unplugs the guitar and
Walks off the stage
And when the show is done
He corners Michelle and says
I think you were great
And will you join my band
And for some reason even she doesn't know
She says yes
