Kelsea Ballerini - Patterns Album Lyrics

Kelsea Ballerini - Patterns Lyrics

Patterns

Like the rhythm in my head
Like the blanket on my bed
Always hangin' by a thread
I got patterns
Like the stars up in the sky
Like I love you 'til goodbye
I got questions, I got whys
I got patterns

Ooh
It's in my generation
It's in my constellations
Moon in Saturn
Ooh
They're rolling through my bloodstream
Not coming apart at the seems
I got patterns

Maybe more than I like healing
I like the feeling of the feeling
That leaves me staring at the ceiling
The morning after
And maybe I'm the one to blame
For doing the same old same
But, hey, what can I say?
I got patterns

Ooh
It's in my generation (it's in my generation)
It's in my constellations
Moon in Saturn
Ooh
They're rolling through my bloodstream
Not coming apart at the seems
I got patterns

Over and over and over again
It's so much deeper than under my skin
Is this a battle that I'll never win?
When does it start and when does it-
Over and over and over again (over again)
It's so much deeper than under my skin (under my skin)
Is this a battle that I'll never win?
When does it start and when does it end?
Over and over and over again
It's so much deeper than under my skin
Is this a battle that I'll never win?
When does it start and when does it end?
Over and over and over again
It's so much deeper than under my skin
Is this a battle that I'll never win?
When does it start and when does it end?

One, two, three, four
Mm, I got patterns
Yeah, I got patterns

Will I outgrow all these patterns?
Will I unknow all these patterns?

Hey, hey

Sorry Mom

Sorry, Mom, I smelled like cigarettes
And my eyes were Casa red
With a poundin' in my head
Showin' up again on Sunday mornin'
You just made the eggs
And turned your head

Sorry, Mom, you know that I had sex
'Fore I bought the white dress
I know you're not impressed
With my lack of stickin' to the Bible
Yeah, I got regrets
But you did your best

I turned out alright
So you can sleep good at night
Maybe I ran all the red lights
Maybe we got into a few fights
It's a different cloth we cut
But underneath we're the same blood
So I know it took a little tough love
To become the woman that you're proud of

Sorry, Mom, I didn't graduate
After two years and some change
And that money went to waste
I know it wasn't cheap tuition
There were dreams to chase
And songs to play

Sorry, Mom, I missed your fifty-eighth
I was on another plane
Goin' to another stage
My priorities were out of balance
You told me to go
But wished I was home

Now, I turned out alright (Alright)
So you can sleep good at night (Sleep good at night)
Maybe I ran all the red lights
And maybe we got into a few fights
It's a different cloth we cut
But underneath we're the same blood
So I know it took a little tough love
To become the woman that you're proud of

Sorry, Mom
La-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la

Now, I turned out alright
And we both sleep good at night
I met a guy that we both like
And I got a house with a porch light
It's a different cloth we cut
But underneath we're the same blood
So I know it took a little tough love
To become the woman that you're proud of

Sorry, Mom
La-la-la-la-la
Da-da-da-da-da, da-da

Baggage

I don't pack light, I travel for a living
And I don't abide by that fifty pound limit
On that Delta flight out west
I'm there every other Wednesday
But my heart ain't up in the air
So if you want me

Clear out a drawer, clear out a shelf
I wouldn't wanna do it with anybody else
Everything that's heavy, yeah, I check it at the door
Kinda feel like I don't need it anymore
I got some bones of old skeletons
From the old house at the dead end
I've got baggage but I'm moving in

We both slept on a mattress with I love you people
And shit, I even took it all the way to the steeple
So, boy, I know the weight and gravity
Of keychains with same keys
But if you want that welcome mat
Then roll it out with me

Clear out a drawer, clear out a shelf
I wouldn't wanna do it with anybody else
Everything that's heavy, yeah, I check it at the door
Kinda feel like I don't need it anymore
I got some bones of old skeletons
From the old house at the dead end
I've got baggage but I'm moving in

(If you want it, you want it)
(You know that you've got it)

To those thoughts in your head
My hand, back pocket of your jeans
Linen sheets in our bed
'Cause home is when you're with me, so

Clear out a drawer, clear out a shelf
I wouldn't wanna do it with anybody else
Everything that's heavy, yeah, I check it at the door
Kinda feel like I don't need it anymore
I got some bones of old skeletons
I've left the old house at the dead end
I've got baggage but I'm moving in

(Unpacked boxes)
(Half the closet)
(If you want it, you want it)
(You know that you've got it)

Clear out a drawer, clear out a shelf
I wouldn't wanna do it with anybody else

First Rodeo

I like the feeling runnin' with the wind
That's why I went and did what I did
He and I both had our guns to sling
Damn, that showdown was embarrassing

Now I got a couple rips in my jeans
And I'm still here brushing off a couple things
It doesn't scare or bother you, at least it seems
I just want to tell you 'fore I get back in the ring

I rode off into the sunset
The red dust hadn't been kicked up yet
Thought I knew all of the ropes
Thought I could ride like a pro
Never knew I'd have a round two
I fell off, babe, but I found you
Take my heart, but take it slow
'Cause this ain't my first rodeo

Let 'em run, baby, don't you hold your horses back
Love's the wild, wild west, ain't gotta tell me that
But when you put your arms around me, I don't mind
You make me forget about the last time I-

I rode off into the sunset
The red dust hadn't been kicked up yet
Thought I knew all of the ropes
Thought I could ride like a pro
Never knew I'd have a round two
I fell off, babe, but I found you
Take my heart, but take it slow
'Cause this ain't my first rodeo

High up in the saddle, we're flying
Lay me down under amber stars shinin'
Tell me that it's gonna be alright
Even though we never know
If we're gonna make it out alive
But when it comes to me and you, I can't not try
Ain't it crazy, baby, how I'd never know you
If I never rode
Off into the sunset
Off into the sunset

I rode off into the sunset
The red dust hadn't been kicked up yet
Thought I knew all of the ropes
Thought I could ride like a pro
Never knew I'd have a round two
I fell off, babe, but I found you
Take my heart, but take it slow
'Cause this ain't my first rodeo

Don't let me go, take it slow
Baby, don't let me go, take it slow (rodeo)
Don't let me go, take it slow
Baby, don't let me go, take it slow (rodeo)
Don't let me go, take it slow
Baby, don't let me go, take it slow

Nothing Really Matters

I get existential
I get overwhelmed
I live in my mental
When I feel like it's all going down, down, down, down
Am I caught up in the wrong place?
Am I cool enough?
Got two hundred seventy things to reply to (ah)
But you know what?

Nothing really matters, we're on a rock in space
Nothing really matters, ain't a test that you ace
Nothing really matters when I'm seeing your face
And I'm wearing that dress that you like
Nothing really matters, aliens, pyramids
Nothing really matters, kiss whoever you kiss
Hush all the chatter, climb your own ladder
'Cause nothing really matters, nothing really matters anyway
Anyway, anyway, yeah

I should sleep more hours
Eat the birthday cake (whole thing)
Stay naked after showers
And strut around the whole damn place, hey
If it makes you happy
Why are we so sad?
Sure feels like thirty years ago
It can't be all that bad, get it off your back

'Cause nothing really matters, we're on a rock in space
Nothing really matters, give your demons some grace
Nothing really matters when I'm seeing your face
And I'm wearing that dress that you like
Nothing really matters, we're all souls under skin
Nothing really matters, kiss whoever you kiss
Hush all the chatter, climb your own ladder
'Cause nothing really matters, nothing really matters anyway
Anyway, anyway
Anyway, anyway, yeah
Anyway

Anyway, I was just thinking today
It's kinda all about the memories you make, yeah
It's kinda all about the love that you get when you give away
And leave the rest to faith
'Cause that's all that really matters anyway

How Much Do You Love Me

You put on the boots I like
For dinner on Friday night
You say they're uncomfortable
But you wear them anyway
You're texting dad on the side
You're pouring my favorite wine
You're leaning vulnerable
When you'd rather walk away

But when the reverend meets the road
And life goes how it goes
And we're not new no more
What am I in for?

If the meteor hit, babe, would you get
In your car and drive to me to cry with me?
If I went insane and didn't know my name
Would you stay beside of me, reminding me?
If I gamble away my money, would you back
Away? If my jokes weren't funny, would you laugh?
How much do you love me? I gotta ask
How much do you love me?

You let me right on your skin
I know that shit's permanent
But worst case scenario
You can put something over it
If you ever got over it
Would you ever get over it?
Tell me

If the meteor hit, babe, would you get (if this the world was ending, where would you be?)
In your car and drive to me to cry with me? (If this the world was ending, stay with me)
If I went insane and didn't know my name
Would you stay beside of me, reminding me?
If I gamble away my money, would you back
Away? If my jokes weren't funny, would you laugh?
How much do you love me? I gotta ask
How much do you love me?

Mm, do I sound needy and dramatic?
I know that it's love
But silly me for asking how much

If the meteor hit, babe, would you get
In your car and drive to me to die with me? Yeah
If I went insane, even if I didn't know my own name
Would you stay beside of me, reminding me?
If I gamble away my money, would you back
Away? If my jokes weren't funny, would you laugh?
How much do you love me? I gotta ask
How much do you love me?

Mm, how much do you love me?

Two Things

I love New York City, but I can't stay at the Carlyle anymore
My head and bed were messy from the night before
Sunflowers at the door
We said that it was over, what'd you send 'em for?
If I'm bein' honest, let 'em sit outside of 701
Except for that one
I pressed between those two pages of Hemingway poems we love
Probably because

Two things can be true
I'll love and hate you
I'll be your best and your worst day
I'll be your blessin' and curse, babe, yeah
Sometimes I'll cut and ghost
But sometimes I'll get too close
You're nothin' and everythin' I got to lose
Two things can be true, mm
Two things can be true

The next hundred-twenty hours I was obsessively lookin' at my phone
And checkin' your location, did you make it home?
Are you feelin' alone?
Are we turnin' into people that we used to know?
If I'm bein' honest
Couldn't get to Carolina quick enough, I'm not givin' up
Chartered a plane to your doorstep
We made up in your bed
And probably because

Two things can be true
I'll love and hate you
I'll be your best and your worst day
I'll be your blessin' and curse, babe, yeah
Sometimes I'll cut and ghost
Sometimes I'll get too close
You're nothin' and everythin' I got to lose
And two things can be true (I'll be your best and I'll be your worst day)
Two things can be true

My eyes are green (my eyes are green)
Yeah, your jeans are blue
I wish it was that easy
When it comes to me and you

Two things can be true
I'll love and hate you
I'll be your best and your worst day
But you wouldn't want it any other way, yeah
Sometimes I'll cut and ghost
But, baby, don't let me go
You're nothin' and everythin' I got to lose (I got to lose)
And two things can be true, oh yeah (I'll be your best and I'll be your worst day)
And two things can be true (I'll cut and I'll ghost, don't let me in)

Mmm

We Broke Up

We met, we vibed, we jumped in
There was nothing to complicate
God, we were really something
Almost made it all the way

But we didn't and it is what it is, okay?
No use in digging up bones from the grave
When it's over, it's over, it's over

I can take a deep dive in the details
I could hide, I could cry 'til I throw up
Take a stroll, camera roll, old e-mails
But it's as simple as, "We broke up"
I could call my friends and bitch about it
Write a seven minute song, but for what?
Tale as old as time, I don't gotta wrap my head around it
It's as simple as, "We broke up"

It is what it is, okay?
When it's over, it's over, it's over

(There's no use, I know you, know you, know you)

We both could point our fingers
We both have one pointing back
Yeah, we could let the goodbye linger
But, baby, what's the good in that?

'Cause there isn't and it is what it is, okay?
No use in digging up bones from the grave
When it's over, it's over, it's over

I can take a deep dive in the details
I could hide, I could cry 'til I throw up
Take a stroll, camera roll, old e-mails
But it's as simple as, "We broke up"
I could call my friends and bitch about it
Write a seven minute song, but for what?
Tale as old as time, I don't gotta wrap my head around it
It's as simple as, "We broke up"

It is what it is, okay?
When it's over, it's over, it's over

No use in digging up bones from the grave (there's no use, I know you, know you)

I can take a deep dive in the details
I could hide, I could cry 'til I throw up
Take a stroll, camera roll, old e-mails
But it's as simple as, "We broke up"
I could call my friends and bitch about
Another boy driving off mad in a black truck
Tale as old as time, I don't gotta wrap my head around it
It's as simple as, "We broke up"

It is what it is, okay?
When it's over, it's over, it's over
We broke up

WAIT!

I have a nasty habit leaving before I get left
Will think my light's on yellow and I'm keeping you on red
Stonewall my emotions even when I wanna
Wanna cry tears as wide as the oceans but I don't
When fights too many 3 A.M.'s, I guess we're broken up
You're like, "This is just a conversation," baby, what the?
Now screaming goodbye out, which means I love you
Internal warfares is what I always do

Now I'm watching you
It's hitting different now but I'm telling myself

I'm better on my own, I'm better on my own
Wait
Don't go
It's all I've ever know, it's all I've ever know
Wait
Don't go

Can I take you back now?
Can we make it last now?

I'm codependent with my independence through and through
My September makes me stubborn but it's fighting with my moon
When I said just leaving I was only fishing
How stupid of me to think you wouldn't listen
Now you're packing up your t-shirts but I want 'em in the drawer
Can't get myself to say "Stay" before you're out the door
But time and tensions blurring my vision and so once again
My head and heart are at war

I'm better on my own, I'm better on my own
Wait
Don't go
It's all I've ever know, it's all I've ever know
Wait
Don't go
I'm screaming on the phone, I'm screaming on the phone
Wait
Don't go
You're all I wanna know, you're all I wanna know
Wait
Don't go

If I drive you away, will it cut like a blade?
Will it carry the same weight?
At the end of the day I'm just a girl
I'm afraid, turn around, hit the brakes
Ooh, and now you got me

I'm screaming on the phone, I'm screaming on the phone
Wait (can I take you back now?)
Don't go (can we make it last now?)
You're all I wanna know, you're all I wanna know
Wait
Don't go

Can I take you back now?
Can we make it last now?
Can I take the past?
Just the patterns of my past so
Wait

Beg For Your Love

For a kiss, for a morning call
For you to hear me after all
For you to not put back up walls
When you're hurting
For you to let me own my shit
And not overshadow it
And really come to my defense
Like I'm worth it, I deserve it

I'd follow you to the moon, babe
You know I'm ride or die for you
But if you want a chase, I won't run
I ain't gonna beg for your love
I wanna go the distance, babe
But can't do it if I betray
All the way before you work I've done
I ain't gonna beg for your love

Never helped me turn the stone
And, damn, it's getting old
When your shoulder's feeling cold
Well, I'm trying, are you trying?
If you want sorry on my knees
Babe, that can't be me
And god, you can be so mean
When I'm crying

But I'd follow you to the moon, babe
You know I'm ride or die for you
But if you want a chase, I won't run
I ain't gonna beg for your love
I wanna go the distance, babe
But can't do it if I betray
All the way before you work I've done
I ain't gonna beg for your love

Is this just way too tough?
Are you not strong enough?
'Cause, god, you're all I want, all I want
But not like this

I'd follow you to the moon
But it's getting harder to do
If you want a chase, I won't run
I ain't gonna beg for your love
Asking you to say it back, it
It shouldn't have to be like that
So help me, help you, help us
And don't make me say I'm done
I ain't gonna beg for your love
Or for a kiss, or a morning call

Deep

Standing in my underwear
Baby, babe, I'm jumping right in
It's almost like I don't care
If I even know how to swim

You could save me, maybe, I could save myself
What's a girl to do, looking at you?
Something crashing over me like Malibu
I'm diving into you and it feels like

Oceans, oceans around me
I think I'm drowning
God, I can't breathe, put your mouth on me
Open in uncharted waters
If loving you is an ocean
Then I'm in deep

Now it's too late to swim to shore
I don't need an SOS, I guess
From the waves to the floor
I let you move me East to West
I'm running, I'm running, I'm running
Out of air, all over me everywhere
Oh, I'm almost there and it feels like

Oceans, oceans around me
I think I'm drowning
God, I can't breathe, put your mouth on me
Open in uncharted waters
If loving you is an ocean
Then I'm in deep, deep, deep
Deep, deep, deep, deep, deep

I wanna, I wanna, I wanna
Nirvana, nirvana, nirvana
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna
Your body, my body, one body

Cowboys Cry Too

[ Featuring Noah Kahan ]

Mm

He's as tough as the tattoos up his right arm
And I've talked him down from getting in a fight or two
He stands his ground, he's as stubborn as the weeds in the backyard
'Cause growing up, he had to go where the wind blew
He hides his heart and hurt, guess he kinda had to
In a world that says, "Saddle up and be a man"
When the sun goes down and his hazel eyes go blue
That's when I understand

Cowboys cry too
They may not let 'em fall down in their hometown thinkin' they still got shit to prove
That well runs deep
But when he's showin' his skin, lettin' me in, that's when he's toughest to me
I never knew cowboys cry too

I grew up wishing I could close off the way my dad did
'Cause that man never felt a damn thing he didn't wanna feel
But I've burned too many miles tryna ride out all the sadness
But you can't outdrive pain, someday it's gonna take the wheel
Can't be alone, but don't wanna get close to anybody
Don't wanna bare teeth, but don't wanna look weak, it's a tough spot
But I'm afraid you'll walk away when the tears start runnin'
But I hope not

'Cause cowboys cry too
They may not let 'em fall down in their hometown thinkin' they still got shit to prove
That well runs deep
But when he's showin' his skin, lettin' me in, that's when he's toughest to me
I never knew cowboys cry too

Blame it on their fathers
The ones that said they'd stay
Blame it on the songs that tell you they all ride away
But mine ain't that way
I ain't that way

Cowboys cry too
They may not let 'em fall down in their hometown thinkin' they still got shit to prove
That well runs deep (deep)
But when he's showin' his skin, lettin' me in, that's when he's toughest to me

I Would, Would You

I wanna be the one that you're calling when you're drunk
When you're dropping every ball, I'll be there to pick 'em up
'Cause that's just what you do when you love someone
Yeah, that's the choice you choose when you love someone

Call a car, hop a plane, never call you insane, foolproof
Evergreen, on your side, can't you see? Baby, I'm true blue
No conditions, I'd follow you to the moon, no suit
I would, would you?
I would, would you?
I would, I would, I would

Life is short, life is long, but it's better with you here
If somebody does you wrong, baby, hold my beer
'Cause that's just what you do when you love someone
Yeah, that's the choice you choose when you love someone

Call a car, hop a plane, never call you insane, foolproof
Evergreen, on your side, can't you see? Baby, I'm true blue
No conditions, I'd follow you to the moon, no suit
I would, would you?
I would, would you?
I would, I would, I would

When we're ninety-five years old
Divorced and newly-weds
Yeah, I'd still die for you
Then haunt you when I'm dead
I'll think about these nights
Summer of '24
When we lost count of all the
"That's what friends are for"

Call a car, hop a plane, never call you insane, foolproof
Evergreen, on your side, can't you see? Baby, I'm true blue
No conditions, I'd follow you to the moon, no suit
I would, would you?
I would, would you?
(I wanna be the one)
I would, I would, I would
(Yeah, I wanna be the one)
I would, I would, I would

'Cause that's just what you do
(I would, I would, I would)

This Time Last Year

This time last year
Right around the holidays
There were messes in my mind
I was learning all the harder ways

Living it down and drinking a lot
But hitting the town didn't hit the spot
But, oh, how the tides change in 365 days

I gave hell a piece of my mind
It gave me a hit to my pride
I came out on the other side
The devil said, "hi"
But, baby, baby, look at me now
I lost a couple good friends
Untied a couple loose ends
It's all part of shedding old skin and starting again
But, baby, baby, look at me now
Baby, baby, look at me now

It's kinda got me thinkin' 'bout
This time last year
The heartbreak was undeniable
But day by day I
Became unrecognizable

Making my rounds, shooting my shot
Standing my ground, pissing people off
Oh, how the ride's changed in 365 days

I gave hell a piece of my mind
It gave me a hit to my pride
I came out on the other side
The devil said, "hi"
But, baby, baby, look at me now
I lost a couple good friends
Untied a couple loose ends
It's all part of shedding old skin and starting again
But, baby, baby, look at me now

People thinking that I've changed
They used to be my biggest fear, my biggest fear
(This time last year)
Thank god that I changed (thank god that I changed)
From this time (this time), last year (last year)
'Cause this time (this time), last year

I gave hell a piece of my mind
It gave me a hit to my pride but
I came out on the other side
The devil said, "hi"
But, baby, baby, look at me now
I lost a couple good friends
Untied a couple loose ends
It's all part of shedding old skin and starting again
But, baby, baby, look at me now

This time last year
(Baby, baby, look at me now)
This time last year
Baby, baby, look at me now
(Baby, baby, look at me now)

It's gonna be okay

Did You Make It Home?

Is it a time, is it a place?
Is it a person or a change?
Are you safe on the road you chose?
Did you make it home?

Is it the turning of the page?

Ballerini co-produced the album along with Alysa Vanderheym. "Cowboys Cry Too" was released as its first single on June 28, 2024. Three other songs were put out as promotional singles: "Sorry Mom", "Two Things", and "First Rodeo".

Ballerini opted for an all-girl approach to Patterns, as she co-wrote and co-produced all 15 tracks on the album with Alysa Vanderheym, with additional writing on several songs from Jessie Jo Dillon, Karen Fairchild, and Hillary Lindsey. She said the process happened "organically" following a songwriting retreat with her female collaborators, birthing an album "made from womanhood and sisterhood".

The follow-up to the Rolling Up the Welcome Mat EP (2023) that documented the end of her marriage, Ballerini described Patterns as a "super autobiographical" album, taking the listener on a journey when listened from top-to-bottom.

Patterns debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200, marking her highest-charting album to date, and second top 10 entry following Unapologetically (2017). It also debuted atop the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, Ballerini's first album to reach number one on the chart. It arrived with 54,000 equivalent album units earned — her best week by units.
