Joey Diatte - The Bench Lyrics

I remember this one time, when I was sitting on a bench and a man walked up to me
And told me to follow my dreams and I told him I didn't have any
I told him that the house that I lived in had walls of cement and gates
With locks without keys
He asked me where I lived
I told him I didn't know
He asked me where my family went
I told him I didn't feel like I had any
Where I sit is where dreams go to die
Where I walk is where smiles turn to sighs
The man asked me if I needed help
I told him I've already tried that
Sir you could just leave it's ok
Why do you wanna be here with me anyway?

The man says
I'm not gonna do that!
You see son

As Cocoons sprout butterflies
And trees make fruit
And your mom said hello and gave birth to you
You're dreams were born from thoughts
Your thoughts born from your brain
The very brain that told you to go run into the rain
The rain that you called a playground when you were little
With dreams larger than life and the bottomless sea floor
With unknown species yet to be found

You see son like a carpenter that makes tables
And a goldsmith that shapes beauty
I created this world thousands of years ago
So Don't sit on that bench and tell me that you don't know

Go climb a tree
Jump off a small cliff into the sea
Swim and jump and laugh with me
Get off that bench please

This bench isn't what you were created to sit on
I didn't create you to live like this
Where you sit isn't where dreams go to die
Where you walk is not where smiles turn to sighs
Thats your choice
Thats your truth
I created you but you chose to let him taint your youth
Don't let him do that
Take this, put it in your pocket, take it all
Small gifts are pure as gold
My gifts are not to be sold, they give life
So don't lie around and wait! Please go share my gift

And He left and walked away

So I got up from the bench
And followed
Then I woke up
Reached into my pocket and the gift wasn't there
Then I felt my heart and the gold was in there sealed tight
Shut with his hands surrounding gripped with all his might
And I said alright lets do this again, and I got up and started my day
