I sat down for a spell
Did not stand up again
I laid down and died
And the Man put coins on my eyes
He said, "Son, this is what you done wrong
You cheated and lied
And scolded another
And spit in the face of the Lord
Then you laid down and died
Just laid down and died."
Sorrow has no place in a man
Sorrow has no place in a woman
Who would not stand in the place of a child
I awake cold in the ground
Soil and casket-blind to the tears of my mother
But I am not able to cry
Or stand
And speak up loud and say,
"Children, cast me off I'm a stone
There's room to be wild
And time to take lovers."
But I remain silent and cold
I sat down for a spell
Did not stand up again
I laid down and died
