Japanese Breakfast is the solo musical project of American musician Michelle Zauner.

Under the alias, Zauner has released three studio albums: Psychopomp (2016), Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017) and Jubilee (2021).

On April 1, 2016, Japanese Breakfast released its first studio album, Psychopomp, under Yellow K Records. Zauner described the debut album as a confrontation of her mother's death as well as "dark and heavy-handed", although she had a desire to make the music urgent and "sonically upbeat."

On April 20, 2021, Zauner released her first book Crying in H Mart: A Memoir via Alfred A. Knopf. The book debuted at number two on The New York Times nonfiction best-seller list for the week ending April 24, 2021.

The third and final single from Jubilee, "Savage Good Boy", was released on May 19, 2021. The video, directed by Zauner, features actor Michael Imperioli as a billionaire in a bunker, with Zauner as a young woman he has convinced to live underground with him. It is a prequel to the video for "Posing in Bondage".

Zauner has said she hopes her work can influence more Asian-Americans to be involved in music. -Wikipedia
Birth Name: Michelle Chongmi Zauner
Name Origin:
Zauner chose the name because she wanted something that sounded American and exotic, and would make people curious. She also said that she thought the term would be "exotic" to Americans and thought it would make others wonder what a Japanese breakfast consists of.

Zauner is half-Korean and was born into a Korean and Jewish family in Oregon. She has said that she grew up relating to Japanese culture quite a bit because it felt like the closest thing she had.

The name was partially inspired by Zauner's childhood growing up with a white father and Korean mother outside the Oregon college town, where many of her peers assumed she was Japanese. Some didn't even know Korea was a country.
