Japanese Breakfast is the solo musical project of American musician Michelle Zauner (born March 29, 1989).
Under the alias, Zauner has released three studio albums: Psychopomp (2016), Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017) and Jubilee (2021).
On April 1, 2016, Japanese Breakfast released its first studio album, Psychopomp, under Yellow K Records. Zauner described the debut album as a confrontation of her mother's death as well as "dark and heavy-handed", although she had a desire to make the music urgent and "sonically upbeat."
On April 20, 2021, Zauner released her first book Crying in H Mart: A Memoir via Alfred A. Knopf. The book debuted at number two on The New York Times nonfiction best-seller list for the week ending April 24, 2021.
The third and final single from Jubilee, "Savage Good Boy", was released on May 19, 2021.[24] The video, directed by Zauner, features actor Michael Imperioli as a billionaire in a bunker, with Zauner as a young woman he has convinced to live underground with him. It is a prequel to the video for "Posing in Bondage".
Zauner has said she hopes her work can influence more Asian-Americans to be involved in music.
