For the devil that won't subside
The grass grows deep and wide
Judgment shall come to you and still the air
My heart will not feel shame
When sin is brought to flame
For it is God's spoken will
I place you there
As a child I do recall
Through winter, spring, summer, fall
My near and dearest friend
Sweet Jenny Faye
Through golden fields we would run
After all our chores were done
Our families knew the righteous Godly way
But as Jenny Faye grew older
Her ways would steer to
The dreaded sinful life
As she would tempt me to do things
That I ought not even think of
Lest I be wedded and with wife
The devil's temptation can be terribly strong
Though I stayed my strength in The Lord's word
In our sacred hymnal church songs
I prayed and called to God each night
That he might bring her
Back to his righteous path
For it was the truth
I did truly love her
God seemed to be silent to my ear
Or maybe spoke in a tongue to quiet
For my feeble soul to hear
The years just seemed to pass on this way
Until one night God finally spoke to me
In his all-knowing and majestic voice
With a tone as clear as the heavens open sky
As I bowed my head our Lord God
Who art in heaven said to me
For the devil that won't subside
The grass grows deep and wide
Judgment shall come to you and still the air
