Hope Slide - Forest Fires Lyrics

I'm lying here on the floor
In front of the air conditioner
You're asleep on the bed
And I'm too hot to hold you
So I'm cooling off on the floor
Like a cat
A little anxious
Made by your recent health scare
I scroll through Facebook
To see what everyone is doing with their life
The first is of a friend I went to Journalism school with
He's covering the Armageddon that's become the Okanagan
The second one is of another friend
Who's doing a restoration on an old yellow chair
The third is of a girl
I interviewed years ago for Link Magazine
Oh she says life is too short to drink shitty wine
I mean I guess?
The last one is a memorial
For my best friend's father who passed away
One year ago today from an overdose
His mother had called me
Her voice was wet and trembled at hello
Something was wrong
But not quite as wrong and f*cked up as the situation really was
He was asleep on the couch
He'd been living with me
For several months after I returned from Europe
I went outside
And did what I normally do
When I don't know what to
I paced around my alley in East Van
And called my father
And told him what had happened
And went back inside
Somehow finding the courage
To break the news
But he was already up
He burst through the kitchen door
Wailing
Thrashing
Sobbing
With a glowing iPhone in his hand
I took him into my arms
And realized we'd never hugged before
In the five years we'd known each other
It's so strange
The way
Nothingness transforms out of nothingness
Like a virus
Or a disease
Or life itself is derivative of nothing
A moment without feeling
Like my bad sense of time
Or like forest fires
Aflame in English Bay
First there was beauty
Then catastrophe
Born from a biblical lightning strike
But for now
I get up off the floor
And get in bed with you
I've cooled off and now I can hold you
So we can both drift off into nothingness
And in the morning transform together
