I was four when I realised what church was
Six when I worked out why we went
I just accepted God's wonderful work And that my mother was heaven sent
I held my mother's hand while she prayed Just sitting there on her knee
I believe a power came over her Even if I don't believe it was real
She said
You've got to bathe in the blood of the lamb, you've got to pray to God on your knees
Only then will you understand
That you are not worthy
I was 15 when I began to question
The wisdom of a book written by men
That took the word of their heaven sent friend
And used it to justify the end
My mother loved me nevertheless
And she guided my right hand
She said you got to Nail your hand to the cross
And God will make you understand
You've got to bathe in the blood of the lamb, you've got to pray to God on your knees
Only then will you understand
That you are not worthy
I was 21 when we heard the planes coming
Buzzing from across the sea
We all ran to bunkers they prepared
And my mother was there with me
As the ground shook from the bombs above
I held the hand of my wife and girl
And My mother started to praying for love
Calling out to God to be merciful to the world
You've got to bathe in the blood of the lamb, you've got to pray to God on your knees
Only then will you understand
That you are not worthy
And when the bombing had stopped
And I could find a lighter
I found a wooden support had fallen
And stabbed right through my mother
I cried and I wailed and I tried
But it was too late
If there really was a God
Then my mother was at his gate.
You've got to bathe in the blood of the lamb, you've got to pray to God on your knees
Only then will you understand
That you are not worthy
