Freddy Tönnesen - The Gallows Pole Lyrics

In the dusty trails of Tombstone under burning skies
I lived a life of shadows where a man never cries
Banks of silver bags of gold I took without fear
Each heist a whispered story 'bout the outlaw they couldn't near
A gambler's soul cards laid with a smirk
The devil's hand in every deal where darkness lurks
My laughter filled the saloons as fortunes were lost
Now it's just echoes in my heart frozen by frost
Here at the gallows the cold wind cries
Over the murmurs of the crowd under judgmental skies
Seeing faces of those I've wronged their eyes like flint
My wife's silent sobs in the morning's cold glint
Stole from the rich shared with none a shadow in the night
Bursting through bank vault doors giving many a fright
Horses fast guns loaded my gang never trailed
Townsfolk locked their doors when they heard we'd sailed
Up on this gallows looking out at the dawn
Crowd's faces are stones as the noose is drawn
My dear wife's tears break like the day
Holding our son whose future I pray
Shot a man in cold blood under a pale moon's glow
From his last breath a shadow fell and I knew it was time to go
Ran from the law through desert sands a bounty on my head
A life once lived on my own terms now filled with dread
They caught me at the break of dawn no more cards to play
Betrayed by my own kin led the lawmen my way
Dragged in chains to Tombstone no more paths to roam
A lifetime of shadows now just steps from home
At these gallows the end of my tale
My life a fleeting shadow now just a pale
Crowd's eyes on me as the preacher prays
In Tombstone's dust end my lawless days
As the noose tightens the world fades away
In the cold heart of Tombstone this outlaw will lay
Let this ballad be sung let it warn the rest
Of a life on the edge and a soul unblest
