I saw a little cross on the hill
Surrounded by a sea of daffodils
I think I wrote it down but I can't remember now
I saw a little cross on the hill
Did somebody die there
Or was it just that somebody climbed there
We have this way of leaving things behind
There's gotta be another one around here
But in a moment it was gone
I couldn't find it in the light of dawn
But felt it fade into the past
Into a memory where its shadow cast
The land went quiet
The wind was flat and still
I saw a little cross on the hill
I saw an evergreen that lost its leaves
It made me want to roll back down my sleeves
I never liked to see the branches in my veins
Leading to the tapestry they weave
Can an animal still hide there
Or is it only food now for the winter air
But if it falls it might grow taller than before
If nobody decides to build an armchair
But in a moment it was gone
I couldn't find it in the light of dawn
But felt it fade into the past
Into a memory where its shadow cast
The land went quiet
The wind was flat and still
I saw a little cross on the hill
I'll drive up again
And I'll see nothing
I'll drive up again
And I'll feel nothing
