Christopher Esse - The Great Surrender Lyrics

Christopher Esse - The Great Surrender Lyrics

I began to notice when I was twelve
That everything seemed to be going to hell
Food and safety were all that mattered
Even small hopes were beaten and battered

People lost jobs and couldn't find another
Hid in the shadows and stole from their brothers
With no support from city or state
They became Terminals - for whom nothing awaits

Truckers and waiters, lawyers, retailers
Machines took their jobs and left fewer to fill
Nihilist factions preyed on the helpless
Brainwashed to think they created the mess

It's easy, so easy, it's so easy to surrender yourself
It's easy, so easy, it's so easy to surrender yourself

To no one's surprise, the underclass grew
Crammed into camps fenced in like a zoo
Held by the feds in an awkward standoff
Trading freedom for peace, living hand to mouth

From this Great Surrender soon emerged
A deceitful cure where regulations were purged
Pure laissez-faire, a New Renaissance
Promising jobs to the poor and their lot

My dad was a teacher, how long would he last
Even I knew that the die was cast
Awake to the lies and deeply in debt
The best we could do was hang on and forget

It's easy, so easy, it's so easy to surrender yourself
It's easy, so easy, it's so easy to surrender yourself
