WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT
V1
Grieving widow climbs the stairs each night
The candle flickers at the open door
A cold chill takes her breath away
Brush her hair, prepare for morn
She climbs into a empty bed
Sip of water and say her prayers
Takes a pill and shuts her eyes
Awaits an eternal sleep
C
Where to go when the lights go out?
A place of safety and of warmth
The sleep of innocence can be deep
To awake with the morning mist
Monsters crawling under the bed
Dreams of murder and of death
Or a fall from grace with god
Do we sleep, do we sleep in the lion's mouth?
V2
As the church tower chimes the witching hour
The widow dreams her favourite dream
Still youthful, object of desire
But widows weeds she wears them well
Husband gone a year ago
Ship went down with the loss of all hands
Drowning voices cursed their fate
Sank in to a watery grave
V3
A heavy coat is shaken off
Salt water spills across the floor
Footsteps creak on the lonely stairs
A cold hand at the bedroom door
Grieving widow her dreams come true
The price of a promise made
The dead man with a look of love
Lays down on the marriage bed
