My life has been ruined all my memories scarred
The people desert me yet for them I stood guard
I once was their hero willing to die
To die for my country and my place in the sky
Through bloodstained fields we fought 'til we fell
But not many returned with a story to tell
Those days may be gone now but in history they stay
The Lament of the lost Soldier and the price that he paid
Hidden and forgotten out of public eye
They put bars at my windows in case I might fly
Ruled by a uniform, the story of life
The uniform that killed me and divorced my wife
And now they send me to bed as if I'm a boy
Well maybe that's better, back then my gun was a toy
Orders from a man not the age of my son
Who wasn't alive when the Great War's were won
Now I've been left to reflect on this life
Was that why I fought, why I wielded my knife
Too old to remember, too young to forget
Those bloody atrocities live on in my head
