Brian James Kittrell - Summer of No Consequence Lyrics

Brian James Kittrell - Summer of No Consequence Lyrics

In the summer of no consequence I sold my cap and gown
The circus packed up when all the college kids left town
There was lightning in the foothills, fire in the trees
Smoke on the horizon and ashes on the breeze
I wouldn't say that I saw it coming when that mountain burned down

The newsman through the TV screen said it cannot be contained
The trees are dry this time of year and they ain't seen that much rain
They're calling to evacuate so get out while you can
The fire just crossed the river, wind is blowing like a fan
But news of Armageddon didn't scare the anchor man
He's still driving with his top down while that mountain's burning down

They sent the refugees down to the elementary school
There were cots in the gymnasium and all the parking lots were full
With Subarus and pickup trucks with Colorado plates
Bags packed full of extra clothes and pairs of roller skates
Radios playing local news and government mandates saying
Well y'all just best keep your heads down, that mountain's burning down

At the noon the sky was brown and dark, a sign of the end times
That fire's getting bigger about to cross the county line
While men button up their collars and tighten up their ties
The bossman says we all gotta keep working so long as nobody dies
Just wear your dark sunglasses, keep the smoke out of your eyes
Everybody's still working for the weekend while that mountain's burning down

The people in the city said that fire's sure a shame
But they were safe and sound and far away from smoke and flame
In shopping malls with air conditioning to beat the heat
Cash for gold and coffee shops every fifty feet
The chef inside the steakhouse flips another piece of meat
They're still spinning signs on Main Street while that mountain's burning down

The sun was blood red, seeping through the clouds
All the neighbors came to see the show and join in with the crowd
The ashes rained down to commune on my tongue
I couldn't help but smiling when I saw the neighbor's son
Roll down to the corner and stick out his thumb and he asked me
Hey man, how far are you going? You know that mountain's burning down
